A beautiful rendering of Christ as he appears to Saint Peter on the Appian Way. Roman ruins flank the central figures. Tradition places this encounter after the Resurrection as Peter tries to escape persecution in Rome. He asks the Lord, where are you going: “Quo Vadis”, to which the Lord replies: “I am going to Rome to be crucified again”. Whereupon Peter reverses direction and returns to the city. A church was built on this spot and may be visited to this day.
A tender representation of St. Peter’s continued conversion, this engraving represents a founding moment in the history of the Church.
Engraved by T.W. Shaw, and measures approximately 7”x5”. Fine condition.
