Antique copperplate print of the Dominican Abbey, Black Abbey, Kilkenny, founded in 1225. The Black Abbey, dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity, derives its name from the Black Friars, as the Dominicans were called, and is the longest original established foundation of all the Irish priories.

Image engraved in October 1975 by Eastgate, and published in a collection of architectural treasures of Ireland and Wales by Samuel Hooper, London.

This is Plate 1 of a multi-plate series on the Abbey and its grounds. Copperplate engravings are made by design with acid on metal (in this case, copper), and then imprinting the image on paper that absorbs the fine details

This is a salvaged antique engraving. Offered un-matted. Image is in excellent condition and any marks or slight bending of paper are consonant with age. Attribution marks are clearly discernible at bottom of image. Page area measures approximately 12 inches wide by 9.5 tall.
